The next tryout for the girls baseball team is tomorrow, Tuesday, May 28th, at the Techniplex in Pleasantville from 3pm-4pm. Any girl interested in playing for the team must have attended at least one of the first two tryouts. Girls/families are reminded that there is a one time $5 fee, payable at the Techniplex, to cover the rental cost of the facility.

Attention Grade 9 Students!

Do you feel that you are the type of person who has made a positive impact during your time at MDJH? You may qualify as the 2023-24 recipient of the MDJH Student Leadership Award!

To qualify for this award, a student has to meet the following criteria:

• Model excellent behaviour in the classroom
• Be a positive role model in any school-based activity
• Take a leadership role in curricular and co-curricular activities
• Maintain a good attendance/punctuality record
• Maintain a good academic standing
• Work to their academic potential

To apply for this award, students must:

• Fill out this application form
• Write a 500 word essay on why they should be considered for this award referencing the above criteria.

Selected students will be presented with a certificate and have their names permanently inscribed on the school Student Leadership tableau in front of the main office.

The deadline for application is Friday, June 7th.

Congratulations to Grade 9 student Millie J. on being selected as one of 16 Historic Sites Association NL Ambassadors! Millie and 15 other students from throughout the province will travel to France and Belgium for a First World War battlefield tour!

The next Boys Baseball Team Game will be tomorrow (Friday, May 24th) vs Mount Pearl Intermediate at Airport Heights Field at 5:00p.m. Good Luck to the team!

The next tryout for the Girls Baseball Team is tentatively booked for Tuesday, May 28th, from 3:00pm to 4:00p.m.

• The first game for the boys baseball team will be today, Wednesday, May 22nd, at 5:00p.m. at Airport Heights Field. Players are asked to be there 30 minutes prior to the game.
• The next try-out for the girls baseball team will be next week. The date and time for the try-out has not yet been finalized.

Last Friday, students and teachers at MDJH participated in a Community Clean Up as part of our EcoSchoolsCAN initiative. A lot of garbage was collected for Clean St. John’s. A special thank you to City of St. John’s councilor Jill Bruce!

• Letters for the boys baseball team were available at the office last Friday.
• There will be a practice for the boys baseball team tonight, Tuesday, May 21st, from 7pm – 8:30pm in the school gym.
• The next try-out date and time for the girls team will be announced tomorrow.

The 2nd Annual Mark Jackman Memorial Chess Tournament will be held at Gonzaga High School on Saturday, May 25th. This tournament is hosted by the Jackman family and the Gonzaga organizing committee and is open to players of all ages and abilities.

Event timeline:

• Rounds will begin at 10am
• Each player will have a minimum of 5 games, with some players having a BYE in their group if there is an odd number of participants
• SwissSys will be used for pairings and a Swiss System or Round Robin format will be utilized in each division of the tournament
• There will be 5 divisions, based on age group:
  • Primary: Grades K – 3
  • Elementary: Grades 4 – 6
  • Junior High: Grades 7 – 9
  • High School: Grades 10 -12
  • Open: Age 18+
• Tournament will be live streamed
