Multicultural Showcase at MDJH

Today was a very special day at MDJH. After weeks of hard work, a Multicultural Showcase was presented for the staff and students. Flags representing countries of origin of many of our students were hung in the gym, and a flag parade showed off students wearing the traditional regalia of their countries.

Following a land acknowledgement, our principal Dr. Stacey introduced Sa’adatu Usman, the parent who initiated the showcase. She gave a short talk to the students about multiculturalism. We then had presentations from the Inuit Drumming Group, the St. John’s Mi’kmaq Drum Circle, the Persian Elegance Dance Group, and two of our own students presenting a traditional Indian dance.

Students involved in the showcase had also created cultural displays that were viewed by the student body, and they featured traditional food, drink, and music. It was a great afternoon, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Thank you to all the students who participated in making the Showcase a reality, and to Ms. Dawn Squires and Ms. Colleen Power for heading up the project inside the school!

MDJH ROV Team

The MDJH ROV team participated in the MATE NL Regional ROV competition last week on May 1 and May 2 at the Marine Institute on Ridge Road. Our school was very well represented with the team placing 5th place out of 16 teams. The participating students were Eva Churchill, Arnav Ganesh, Dheeraj Lokireddy, Brooklyn Malone, Jordan Melkowitz, Calvin Peretti, Bridget Smith, Krisztian Bajzak, and Nathan Stanley. Things were going swimmingly with their custom 3D printed hydraulic claw until the team ran into a technical issue with their camera in the last heat. Throughout the day students were also given a chance to tour the MI campus, including the monstrous real ROVs on display, and an exploration of future career possibilities.
