Vaping Media Campaign on January 22

The Alliance for the Control of Tobacco (ACT) is hosting a Vaping Media Campaign on January 22 (Weedless Wednesday) at 12:00 Noon at the Fluvarium in St. John’s.

The event aims to educate parents on the dangers of vaping, and provide information on current legislation and initiatives to address the issue. NLFSC will be participating, however we need school council members, parents, and community representatives to attend as well.

We also need parents and/or school council representatives to speak (briefly) at the event. If you are able to attend and would like to share your experience/concerns on the issue of vaping among our youth – please call me at (709) 764-8993 or email: nlfsci@gmail.com.

The issue of vaping and smoking is a growing concern in this province. Parents and teachers are seeing rate increases in vaping among junior and senior high-age students. Unfortunately, many mistakenly think that vaping is harmless water vapor, not addictive, and/or less dangerous than cigarette smoking. However, the liquid in e-cigarettes contains many chemicals and heavy metals, including formaldehyde, arsenic and lead – the refills contain the same amount of nicotine as an entire package of cigarettes. This means that children who vape a refill a day are consuming the equivalent nicotine as smoking a pack of cigarettes a day.

NLFSC is a member of the Youth Tobacco and Vaping Committee, founded by the NL Alliance for the Control of Tobacco, which has been working to raise awareness among junior and senior high school students about the dangers of e-cigarettes and vaping. This Media Campaign on January 22nd at 12:00 Noon in St. John’s is a very important event! Please do your best to attend.

Tobacco is still the leading cause of preventable death and disease in Canada.

Together we can make a difference! Every Action Counts!
