Track and Field Update

Congratulations to all of our runners who participated in last Saturday’s race at Bowring Park. Our students ran their best and represented our school well.

  • Special congratulations to our Grade 7 boys team whose combined score put them in first place.
  • We also need to celebrate Allison Duffett who placed first in her race with a time of 6 minutes and 56 seconds to complete the 1800 m course and earned herself a gold medal.
  • Aidan Douglas also earned a gold medal by placing first in his race with a time of 5 minutes and 48 seconds in the 1800 m race.
  • Matthew Earle was not far behind and placed third, earning himself a bronze medal in the same race.

We are proud of all of our students who rose to the challenge of completing this long distance race up and down the scenic hills of Bowring Park. Well done!!! We are still welcoming new runners to join our team. The next race is Saturday, September 24th and we have reason to feel very optimistic about this running season.

Way to go, Grizzlies!

MDJH Connections Night – Sept. 22

On Thursday, September 22nd we are hosting our first Connections Night from 7:00pm to 8:00pm; this is replacing the typical curriculum night that has traditionally been a part of the start of the school year. In changing our approach, we wanted to make the evening less formal and still allow for you to meet and greet with teachers and staff.

As you maneuver around the building, you will see all of our teachers in black legacy t-shirts for easy identification. MDJH is 50 years old and this year is our legacy year.

Please review your child’s PowerSchool schedule ahead of time so you will know which teachers you are looking to meet.

Please take note that this is not a curriculum night – there will be no discussion related to curriculum or children’s needs at this time with teachers. Our teachers are available through email if you wish to discuss anything personal. You will meet a magnificent team of teachers. We are very grateful and blessed to have the expertise that we do here at MDJH. Chat with them and get to know them – after all, learning is a community partnership at MDJH.

You are able to pick up a map upon entry when you see our admin table! We have highlighted the class numbers on the map for easy viewing.

  • English – hallway around Room 215
  • Science – Lab areas Rooms 122-124
  • Math – hallway around Room 205

On Thursday, think about bringing along some items for our breakfast club to support our learners. These items need to be peanut free – such as crackers, goldfish, cheese and crackers, granola bars, cereal bars, cereal. Or a monetary donation. Also, we are still looking for parent volunteers to help us out daily from 7:45am – 8:05am. If you are interested, contact Ms. Jennifer Riggs at jenniferriggs@nlesd.ca.

School Holiday – Monday, September 19th

In honour of the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II, the provincial government has decided that schools and government services will be closed on Monday, September 19th. This will be a “one-off” provincial holiday.

As the school will be closed on that day, there will be no tryouts on that day as well.

Tuesday, September 20th will be Day 3 on the schedule.

Cross Country Update

Here is the information you need to know to register for the race on Saturday as well as any future races.  You need to go to the NLAA cross country series website using the following link:

https://www.nlaa.ca/xcseries/index.php

This website will answer some of the questions you and your family may have and it contains the link to register for the race.  If you go down to the section on Registration and Fees, you can click on the link there for “Online Registration & Payment”.  Here you will enter the information about yourself to register for the race.  We are a NLAA affiliated school and have paid our membership fee for the year, so please remember to enter the code MDJH to get the discount.  The race will then cost only $5.00 to complete the registration.

Below is also a link for race times as well as a course map.  Grade 7s race at 11:00, Grades 8 and 9 race at 11:15.  They recommend arriving 45 minutes to an hour before your race to get your race bib number, which must be worn, and to get warmed up and ready to run.

We will practise again Friday, September 16th, and meet at the main entrance of the school at 2:20.  Practice will wrap up at 3:00.

Thank you for your interest and support,

Mr. Luchford
