Rapid Test Kit Distribution

In order to prepare for the reopening of in-school instruction on Monday, January 24, the Education Minister and NLESD have said that COVID-19 Rapid Test Kits will be made available to all students.

Please note: if it is confirmed by the Minister, Department of Health and the NLESD tomorrow (Wednesday, January 19), and we will be going back to in-person instruction on Monday, January 24, we will begin dispersing the rapid kits on Wednesday. Confirmation will be sent through a follow-up email.

In order to ensure everyone’s safety, we will have a drive-by pick-up at the Student Entrance at MDJH, alphabetically according to student last name. Families can arrange to have another parent/guardian pick up their child’s kit if they are unable to make their allotted time.

To keep traffic moving in a timely fashion, we will have two lines of traffic at the Student Entrance. One line will move through the Bus Lane and the second line will move through the student pick-up lane. Staff will be onsite to verify the student(s) names and distribute the rapid kits. See the schedule below.

Update on K-12 Classes and Rapid Test Rollout

January 13, 2022

A target date of Monday, January 24 has been set for the return to in-class instruction for students under the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District (NLESD) and the Conseil Scolaire Francophone Provincial (CSFP).

The Department of Education will continue to work with public health officials to monitor the risk level, and final confirmation of this targeted return date will occur on Wednesday, January 19. A key component of this plan to return to in-class instruction is the use of COVID-19 rapid test kits for students, teachers, administrators and staff.

Distribution of rapid tests to schools is already underway, and kits will be rolled out to families and staff once a date to return is finalized, in advance of required testing. School administrators will provide information to parents and guardians on how to access their kits.

Prior to the resumption of classes, all students, teachers and staff will be required to take two tests at home approximately 72 hours apart. If classes resume on Monday, January 24 as planned, the first test should be done on Friday, January 21 and the second on the morning of January 24.

Further details on the use of rapid tests in schools, including symptomatic testing once schools reopen, can be found here.

Public Advisory: K-12 Classes to Remain Virtual Next Week

Government of Newfoundland and Labrador

January 6, 2022

Classes for the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District (NLESD) and the Conseil Scolaire Francophone Provincial (CSFP) will remain virtual next week (January 10-14). A further update will be provided no later than Thursday, January 13 on the following week.

Since the initial announcement of a return to virtual learning, the entire province has moved to Alert Level 4. The Department of Education and the school districts are working with public health to monitor the risk level, with a view to resuming in-person classes at the earliest possible opportunity.

The Departments of Education and Health and Community Services are working with the NLESD to coordinate distribution of COVID-19 rapid tests to all schools in both districts throughout the province over the coming days. It is anticipated that rapid testing will play a role in the resumption of classes in the coming weeks, as well as for the ongoing operations of schools going forward. Details on how these tests will be used are still being finalized, and the department expects to provide an update with further details next week.

Guidance Support For Students

Happy New Year folks!

Ms. Ward and Ms. Reardon have a guidance space set up for anyone who would like to avail. The Google Classroom code is:

  • peb3w63

This is completely voluntary. The classroom was created to help students with stress reduction while they are home during this online learning process. Feel free to contact us through email or Google Classroom message if you have any questions. We will try to post tips and strategies to this classroom on a regular basis.

We also have a virtual classroom that you can take a look in! There are some pretty neat things in there!

And finally, a website you can view that has some really great resources!

Thanks!

Ms. Ward & Ms. Reardon

School Resumes Tomorrow – January 4

Hello to our MDJH community. We hope you all had a safe and enjoyable Christmas break. School will be resuming tomorrow, January 4th, in an on-line format. Here are some notes to help you have a successful First Day back at MDJH.

  • Tomorrow, January 4th, will be Day 5 on the schedule.
  • Students will follow their regular 5 period schedule, just as if they were attending in person.
  • Here is our daily schedule:
    • Period 1 – 8:13 – 9:10
    • Period 2 – 9:11 – 10:0
    • Recess – 10:08 – 10:23
    • Period 3 – 10:24 – 11:21
    • Lunch – 11:21 – 12:14
    • Period – 4 12:15 – 1:12
    • Period 5 – 1:13 – 2:10
  • Students will start the day in Period 1, as there will not be a homeroom period.
  • Attendance will be taken in each period. Students are expected to attend every class, just as if we were in the school itself.
  • Recess and lunch breaks are built into the schedule. Students should use that time to stretch and move about, use the washroom, or grab something to eat.
  • Classes may not last the full scheduled period, and will be a combination of different teaching strategies. There may be direct teaching, group work, individual assignments, etc. Each class will be conducted at the discretion of the teacher in charge.
  • The Google Meet link for classes will be in each teacher’s Google Classroom.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child’s subject teacher, or the administration.
