Mini-Enrichment Notices

Students who were successful in receiving a mini-enrichment course placement will get letters today informing them of which course they will attend, as well as the date and location of the course. Students will be expected to follow the instructions in the letter, as there are no refunds for missed courses.

Please remember that the Student Waiver must accompany the student and be handed in at the start of the course, otherwise the student will not be allowed to participate. If you need another copy of the Waiver, you can download it by clicking here. The Waiver is on the third page.

Another Basketball Banner for MDJH

The MDJH Grade 8 Boy’s Basketball team won the 2016 East Coast Provincial Banner this past weekend. This is the second year in a row that the boys have won the Provincial banner. The season saw many player injuries and some tough losses. However, this past weekend at the MDJH gymnasium a healthy school team came together beating Corner Brook, Brother Rice, and St. Peter’s in the round robin. In the championship game MDJH defeated St. Paul’s for the banner and gold medal. Well done to the players, coaches and parents.

Player of the Game : (championship game): Ian Shears

Enrichment Mini-Courses!

Once again, students from Macdonald Drive Junior High have the chance to participate in the Enrichment Mini-Course program . These two day, out-of-school courses give students a chance to explore new and interesting topics, or to brush up on their skills in areas near and dear to them. The courses are held throughout April and May and are hosted at Memorial University of Newfoundland  (MUN), College of the North Atlantic (CNA), Marine Institute (MI) and District School (DS).

Many of these courses offer limited enrollment, and registration is first-come, first-served. Students wishing to participate must complete an application form, and select their four desired mini-courses in order of preference. Students will only be able to participate in ONE course, but those who list four choices will gain preference over those selecting only one to three courses.

The cost for participation is $40 (non-refundable if a student is chosen for a mini-course), and the fee and completed application form must be returned to the MDJH Main Office by end of school on Monday, March 14th. Cheques can be made payable to Macdonald Drive Junior High.

Application forms are available from the MDJH Main Office, or you can download a copy by clicking here. Please note that you will have to hold on to the Mini-Course Waiver, as the student must bring that with them to the mini-course on the day that they attend.

Activity Day Permission Forms

On Friday, February 26th, we will be holding our annual Activity Day as part of Green Apple Days / Spirit Week. Students were given a list of the available activities on Friday morning, and were asked to select one activity that they would like to participate in, as well as two alternate activities should their first choice be full. Permission forms were also given to students for activities that are held off of school grounds, and these forms need to be signed and returned to the homeroom teachers as soon as possible.

In the afternoon we will be hosting Mr. Gary Summers and his hypnotism show, where Grade 9 students can try to be hypnotized (signed permission form required for this as well), and the rest of the student body will enjoy the show.

There is an associated cost of $10.00 for most activities (Breakout NL costs $20.00), and some activities require specific clothing (helmet and skates for skating, gym clothes for the Field House, etc.). This fee will help offset the costs associated with busing and the activities themselves.

Students are expected to participate in one activity in the morning and attend the show in the afternoon. This will be a great day!

Toy-Drive-graphic

MacDonald Drive Junior High is hosting a toy drive and fundraiser for needy families. We invite you to help by donating a new, unwrapped toy with a value of around $10 to $30 dollars. Consider kids up to about 11 years of age when shopping. You may also help by making a donation of $5.00 or more. We expect to give any toys collected to the Happy Tree foundation, and to distribute any funds collected to needy families in our school community. Donations can be dropped off at the office, or given to homeroom teachers. To show our appreciation for your generosity, each donation will give you a ticket on a draw for a set of Beats headphones. The prize draw will be held on Dec. 22nd.
