Spelling Bee Winners

The second level of the Spelling Bee competition, sponsored by The Telegram, was held on Thursday, February 5, in the LRC. Two student winners from each grade seven and eight class were involved. It was a real “nail biter” as numbers of competitors dwindled and words became increasingly more complex.
Rine Zaman of 8-2 placed first while Jake Clarke of 8-5 placed second. Both boys will move forward to the regional competition. The Telegram Regional Spelling Bee will be held on Saturday, February 28, at Holy Heart auditorium. The show starts at 2pm. Come out and support our fantastic spellers!

MDJH Spelling Bee

Spelling bee

The Telegram is sponsoring a spelling competition that engages young people in an exciting pop-culture phenomenon that not only encourages spelling proficiency, but also inspires fun, spirit and sportsmanship.  This program is open to students in grades 4 to 8 and is divided into four stages:

  • Classroom spelling bees
  • School level spelling bee
  • The Telegram St. John’s Regional Spelling Bee
  • Scripps National Spelling Bee (in the US)

MDJH is offering this program to our grade 7 and 8 students.  Within the next 2 weeks, English teachers will be administering an optional, written Spelling Bee in their classrooms.  The winner of each class will compete in a school-level, verbal Spelling Bee. The winner at this level will represent the school in the regional spelling bee.

Parent Session – Social Media Safety

On Monday evening, January 26, 2015, as part of our “Talking to Your Teens” series, The Green Apple Alliance of MDJH will host a presentation for parents by Mr. Lyle Wetsch, from Memorial University. He will be speaking on the importance of parents being aware of and vigilant toward the various apps and websites that our students, your children, are exposed to and the implications of this for their social and mental wellness. As well, Professor Wetsch will offer parents some helpful insights into managing their own social media and other online routines.

To give us an idea about numbers we are asking parents to pre-register by e-mailing Mr. Terry Ryan, one of our Guidance Counselors.
