Activity Day Permission Forms

On Friday, February 26th, we will be holding our annual Activity Day as part of Green Apple Days / Spirit Week. Students were given a list of the available activities on Friday morning, and were asked to select one activity that they would like to participate in, as well as two alternate activities should their first choice be full. Permission forms were also given to students for activities that are held off of school grounds, and these forms need to be signed and returned to the homeroom teachers as soon as possible.

In the afternoon we will be hosting Mr. Gary Summers and his hypnotism show, where Grade 9 students can try to be hypnotized (signed permission form required for this as well), and the rest of the student body will enjoy the show.

There is an associated cost of $10.00 for most activities (Breakout NL costs $20.00), and some activities require specific clothing (helmet and skates for skating, gym clothes for the Field House, etc.). This fee will help offset the costs associated with busing and the activities themselves.

Students are expected to participate in one activity in the morning and attend the show in the afternoon. This will be a great day!

International Baccalaureate (IB) Program @ Holy Heart of Mary (HHM)

Parents/Guardians,

In response to inquiries from parents regarding information about the International Baccalaureate Program at Holy Heart.

Holy Heart of Mary High School will be hosting an information session for parents of grade nine students coming to Holy Heart in September 2016 at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 24 at the Holy Heart Theatre.

Immediately following the general information session, there will be a meeting for all parents interested in learning about the International Baccalaureate Program for the upcoming school year.

For your own information to assist you in your guidance of students in course selections and in choosing their future academic path, the International Baccalaureate Program is best suited to students who are seeking to challenge themselves academically. The IB Learner Profile identifies students who are naturally inquisitive, motivated, self-directed, and open-minded risk-takers. It may be the highly motivated overachiever, but it may also be the student who is very intelligent and contemplative, but is not achieving to his or her ability because he or she seems bored in the regular program and would benefit from an accelerated or enriched program of study.

The IB Program does not require candidates to be straight ‘A’ students, but allows for a balance of strengths and needs in different subject areas. The most important factors are the student’s own individual motivation and strong work ethic.

The deadline for applications to the IB Program is March 14, and the application as well as instructions for the application process can be found on the Holy Heart website at

http://www.holyheart.ca/departments/ib/

For the purpose of course selections for grade 10 pre IB students, the following are some of the advanced courses of study that MUST be completed at the end of Grade 10:
Math 1201 + Math 2200 + Canadian History 1201 or Histoire du Canada 1231
Science 1206 + science choices (Chemistry 2202 & Chemistry 3202) OR (Biology 2201 & Physics 2204)
English 1201

Spelling Bee Winners @ MDJH

The School Spelling Bee competition was held on Monday, February 1st, in the LRC. Two student winners from each grade in seven and eight participated. It was a real “nail biter” as competitors pondered and reflected on the words given by moderator, Ms. Edwina Mills.

Linda Zhang of 8-6 placed first while Momin Anwar of 7-3 placed second. Both students will move forward to the Regional competition. The Telegram Regional Spelling Bee will be held on Saturday, February 27, at Holy Heart (HHM) auditorium. There is registration for our winners, which begins at 10:30 AM at HHM auditorium. The spellers will then move to the stage at approximately 11:50 AM. There is a hospitality room, opening at 10:30 AM with tea, coffee, sandwiches, cookies, and muffins for all to enjoy. Family and friends are invited – there is no admission, although Holy Heart Theatre accepts donations for the food bank. The show starts at 2:00 PM.

Come out and support both Linda and Momin on the 27th.
