Cupcakes for Pink Day

On Wednesday, February 22nd the students and staff of Macdonald Drive Junior High will be celebrating Pink Day, a national day recognizing Bullying Awareness with the message that Bullying Stops Here! This day originated in Nova Scotia when a group of boys noticed a new grade 9 student being bullied for wearing pink. To show their support of the new student they, along with several other male students, arrived at school the next day wearing pink shirts. To promote the anti-bullying theme of Pink Day, students at Macdonald Drive Junior High will be offered pink cupcakes on February 22nd when they wear an article of pink clothing to school that day.
This endeavor has been very successful in the last few years due to the tremendous support of our students and parents.
Once again this year we are requesting parental donations of pink, iced cupcakes for Wednesday, February 22nd . If you are able to help us in this endeavor please email Ms.Jackie Taylor-Myles at jacquelinetaylormyles@nlesd.ca or Ms. Tracy Reardon at tracyreardon@nlesd.ca or contact the school at 753-8240.
Cupcakes should be delivered to the office by 9 a.m. Wednesday morning. Please remember that this is a nut-free environment.

National Sweater Day – February 2nd

National Sweater Day is Thursday, February 2nd. This is a fun way to learn about the importance of saving energy and to inspire you to use less heat all winter. Heating accounts for 80% of residential energy use in Canada and is a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions. If all Canadians lowered their thermostats by just 2 degrees Celsius this winter, it would reduce emissions by about 4 megatons – that’s equivalent to shutting down a 600 megawatt coal-fired power station or taking nearly 700,000 cars off the road!

Wear a sweater and dress warmly on Thursday, Feb.2. For more information, please visit the World Wildlife Fund website @ http://www.wwf.ca/events/sweater_day/

MDJH Supports the Muslim Community

Many of you will have heard by now of the events that happened Sunday night in Quebec City, where there was a shooting in a mosque during evening prayers. Six men have died, and many more are injured. They were fathers and teachers and shop owners – they were human beings with lives and dreams.
We at MDJH want to express our love and support for the families in Quebec City who have lost their loved ones, and for the broader Muslim community who has been the target of this act of violence. As a gesture of support, we will send a delegation of students and teachers to the event “Human Shield— Protect our Mosques St. John’s”. This delegation will include our school’s Student Council, some of our school’s Muslim students, as well as some MDJH teachers.  People are asked to come to the mosque at 430 Logy Bay Rd. in St. John’s on Friday around 12:30 to greet members going in for prayers.  Any members of the public are welcome to attend.

Readfor15 Challenge – Family Literacy Day

Family Literacy Day is on January 27th, and you can join in by participating in activities that promote reading and learning as family activities. This special day communicates the important message to children and parents in our community that the reading and learning activities we engage in as a family contribute to the development of good communication skills.

In honour of Family Literacy Day, the Newfoundland and Labrador Laubach Literacy Council Inc. (NLLLC) is planning a ReadFor15 Challenge for every community across Newfoundland and Labrador. For this challenge we ask that whoever reads for 15 minutes or more, between the hours of 9 AM and 5 PM, during Family Literacy Day to let us know through our Facebook or Twitter. At the end of the day the NLLLC will tally up the numbers to find out exactly which community is the best well-read community. For more information, click here!
