Our school science fair on March 12 was a great success. It showcased mostly grade 7 students, with the addition of a few determined scientists in grades 8 and 9. In all, we had almost 100 projects registered, with fifteen judges drawn from St.John’s scientific community. Judges were very impressed with the overall caliber of the projects and enjoyed the experience of talking with our students. The science department is proud of all our students who participated and excited to announce the top projects of the MDJH Science Fair 2020. These students will represent our school at the Regional Science Fair at the regional Husky Energy Science and Technology Fair on April 24-25 at the Marine Institute, accompanied by science teacher Mrs O’Leary.

An important memo from NLESD:

Effective today, Friday, March 13, the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District
(NLESD) has suspended all extra-curricular activities involving interaction between different
school populations until further notice.

This includes regional and provincial sports tournaments, heritage fairs, science fairs, drama
festivals, or any activity that sees multiple school populations gathered for showcase events or
competition.

This is an unfortunate measure but a prudent step the District is taking in an effort to contain the
potential community spread of the COVID-19 virus.

Please note that applications for the Summer Programs in French for Grade 9 students are now available on the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development’s website at https://www.gov.nl.ca/eecd/k12/french/bursaries/

The application deadline is April 24.

Radhoc Youth Leadership is hosting a camp on June 26th-30th at Memorial University. The camp is for students in grade nine to students leaving grade twelve. Radhoc is a for youth by youth organization that aims to educate high school students on local and global societal issues and leadership skills. We do this in the hope that they will be able to return to their schools and communities with the motivation and skills necessary to make a positive change in the world.

At camp, students can expect to participate in a wide variety of workshops, activities, and events geared toward leadership development and awareness of societal issues. Students will also have the opportunity to meet other students from many different localities and speak with local community leaders! Camp costs only $20, and this includes lodging and all meals for the duration of camp. If the $20 fee is a barrier to a student’s ability to apply to camp, we are happy to waive the fee for them! For students travelling from rural localities in Newfoundland and Labrador, we do have a budget for scholarships to assist with travel costs, but this is a limited amount. That being said, we do try our best to make camp accessible to everyone! Unfortunately at this time, we are unable to assist with travel from outside Newfoundland and Labrador, but happily accept applicants from elsewhere in Canada.

Our camp provides many students from outside of St.John’s an excellent opportunity to view Memorial Universities Campus!

As you are aware, countries worldwide are dealing with the outbreak of COVID-19, “coronavirus”. The Newfoundland and Labrador English School District will continue to take guidance from the Department of Health and Community Services and relevant Public Health Agencies in supporting our school communities as this situation evolves.

We encourage you to review these documents and discuss with your school-aged children the practice of good hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette, both of which are key to reducing transmission of COVID-19, as well as other viruses.

• Good hand hygiene involves cleaning​ hands often by washing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or with an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that
  contains at least 60-95% alcohol if soap and water is not readily available.
• Respiratory etiquette means covering your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze. Cough or sneeze into a tissue or into your upper sleeve, not your hands. Put the used tissue in a waste basket.

The District will continue to liaise with officials from the Department of Health and Community Services and Public Health Agencies and will update our school
communities as appropriate.

Thank you to everyone who has offered to donate cakes/pies for our Pi Day cake auction on Friday afternoon. Pies can be dropped off at the school from 6-9 on Thursday evening, March 12 or Friday morning March 13, by 9 am.

We are also still collecting prizes for our prize draw. Lauryn C., a Grade 8 student here at MDJH, is a finalist in a design a mask contest for Hockey Canada’s women’s team! We only have until Sunday to vote. This is extra special to her because she won the World Junior design a mask contest in 2017. She would be thrilled to say she had the opportunity to design both the men’s and women’s goalie masks for Hockey Canada. Thank you in advance for your support!
